Episode 1
John Bannerman and his wife Sarah open The Grand, a lavish hotel in Manchester. However, they soon realize that the hotel is in dire financial straits.
Episode 2
Marcus' proposal to have the resident staff live outside of the hotel is vehemently opposed.
Episode 3
The Bannermans' young son, Stephen, becomes besotted with a posh girl and steals from the hotel safe in order to impress her.
Episode 4
Esmee's continued support of Monica arouses the jealousy of other maids and tempers are frayed because a bout of illness has laid several staff low.
Episode 5
A former school-friend of surviving daughter Adele comes to The Grand, supposedly to convalesce after an operation.
Episode 6
John Bannerman is bitten by a stray dog and the doctor tells him he may have caught rabies.
Episode 7
Ruth is annoyed that Marcus is organizing her life, so she asks him why he is marrying her.
Episode 8
Monica is sentenced to hang and Kate accuses Esmee of being responsible for her fate.
